Fringe Benefits: Discount Dental and Health Plans

Discount health and medical plans provide human resources managers, administrators, and employers with an affordable alternative to group dental and health insurance. Wholesale, affinity, and private label discount dental and health care benefit plans offer inexpensive options to supplement existing benefit programs.

Bundled care discount benefits program options offer substantial health care savings for members of organizations, groups, associations and businesses. The buying power of many individuals within a large group of consumers allows provider care organizations to negotiate much lower prices by offering wholesale rates for health care and other services to group members who normally would not have access to such favorable rates.

There are many associations and unions with large memberships that enjoy the deepest discounts on all levels of bundled care health and dental discount programs. Our wholesale plans include the lowest individual participant start-up account fees, professional provider discounts, and guaranteed savings on out-of-pocket health care expenses.

Discount plans offer a wide variety of benefits to your members or employees. Because discount benefits plans are not insurance, they are inexpensive, have no restrictions as to age or conditions, and have no annual limits.

When purchasing a wholesale, or private label, discount benefits package for organization members or full / part-time employees, it is important to remember that the volume of non-voluntary participants is a key factor to negotiating the best rate for your group.

Best Discount Benefits specializes in working with clients to develop alternative low-cost health care solutions for large groups since 2002.

Discount Health Plans - Questions and Answers

Based on recent questions and surveys, here are a few of the most asked questions regarding the use of bundled care discount health benefits plans as fringe benefits programs for employees, trade associations and union members.

Q: What’s the typical demographic audience for a discount health benefits plan?

A: The demographic is people under 65 years of age that currently either have group or individual health insurance which has a high deductible. In addition, those who do not have health insurance and want the ability to reduce their out-of-pocket health care costs would find using the discounts available through our large provider list very beneficial. Because of the wide variety of benefits provided with a bundled care discount health program, there is also the opportunity to receive savings and discounts on services that are not provided through standard health insurance plans. Some examples of non-covered services include discounts of 5-50% on orthodontics, alternative care, chiropractic care, infertility, weight loss (Jenny Craig / NutriSystem), fitness clubs, and LASIK.

Q: Does the marketplace view discount health benefits plans as most consumers’ primary form of health coverage, or is it seen as a supplement to existing coverage?

A: Discount health benefits plans are considered supplementary rather than primary coverage. However, since so many people have lost health insurance benefits and coverage, discount health plans are utilized as a realistic way to save money because of the discounts and savings offered. By way of statistics, it's estimated that 28% of US adults, or an estimated 50 million people were uninsured during the past year. More than 20% of uninsured reside in households that earn $50K or more annually. A growing number of middle-income families cannot afford health insurance payments even when the coverage is offered by employers. Sixty four percent of the uninsured are employed full-time, year round.

Q: What do you think the role is for this type of healthcare coverage in light of the current health care reform act and the legislative environment in Washington DC?

A: We feel that the current legislative environment in Washington will have little effect on bundled care discount health benefits plans. All indications are that even as the health care reform act becomes a reality, it will be years before many of the proposed changes are enacted. Discount health benefits plans will continue to provide a viable alternative for the foreseeable future. Regardless of where current health care reform efforts may lead, there will continue to be a need for health discount programs in the years to come. It is likely that true health care reform will take years to implement; and even if full legislation were to take effect immediately, any plans made available to the uninsured are likely to include at least as many limitations and exclusions as the Medicare model, including limitations or exclusions for prescription drugs, medical supplies and durable medical equipment, laboratory tests and more. Programs offering savings on these health care services will continue to offer value to consumers. Further, most of the current health care issues center on medical coverage. Consumers will continue to need savings on ancillary services such as: dental, vision, hearing, and alternative care; weight loss and smoking cessation programs; as well as other wellness-related products and services that can help them stay healthy and lower their overall health care costs.
